I’ve even seem someone use a spoon & candle to warm the spoon!
First, cut shapes of the napkin that you want to add to the candle. Trim them mindfully because the edges of your design will show unless the paper is the same color as the candle. So you want all your edges to be pristine and even.
It’s easier to cut the napkin when it’s thicker but after your shapes are cut, peel away the top layer of the napkin. Most napkins are 2 ply so you want to isolate the layer of the paper that has the designs. You want this paper to be as thin as possible so it will lay flush with the candle.
Next, decide if you want to attach the decoupage paper with an iron, a blow dryer, a heat gun or even a spoon and a tea light candle. Here is a breakdown for each.

Blow Dryer & Heat Gun
For this method you don’t need a piece of parchment. Simply set the candle on a safe spot and gently heat the candle where you plan on placing the decoupage. Press the decoupage into the candle surface and continue to heat until the decoupage holds in place.
Be especially mindful of the edges. Make sure that the edges don’t peel away from the candle. Use your fingers to gently smooth down the decoupage to remove any imperfections or bubbles in between the candle and the decoupage.

Iron
To use an iron, set the heat on low. Wrap your parchment paper around the candle so the iron never touches the candle itself. Gently press the iron to the candle for just a few seconds. Use your hand to help the decoupage adhere. Continue touching the iron to the candle until the decoupage completely adheres.
Spoon & Tea Light
With one hand, hold the decoupage in place on the candle. Use a tea light to warm the tip of a spoon. Press the spoon gently into the decoupage for a few seconds and move the spoon to a new spot. Continue this process of heating the spoon with the candle and then pressing the spoon into the decoupage until the entire piece is holding in place.
Why Aren’t Decoupage Candles Safe to Burn?
Although the paper is really thin, adding paper to a candle can make the flame unpredictable. Likely you can burn decoupage candles that just have tiny wisps of paper around the edges, but if you have large pieces, just use these candles as a display and follow this safe to burn DIY Wax Painted Candles Tutorial here.
