Every summer I daydream about taking a road trip to visit all of my favorite festivals. Some of these are music festivals, other are art festivals, but most of them fall into some weird category of what-kind-of-festival-is-this-anyway kind of festival. Pop Shop was created because I was so inspired by all of these events. A few of them I’ve been able to attend but most of them are events that I look at online and daydream about.
In celebration of our festival June 13th and 14th (find out more here) I compiled this list of my favorite festivals all across the country. I demand that you get to these festivals ASAP if you are anywhere near them!
Art Star Craft Bazaar May 9th and 10th Philadelphia, PA
An outdoor retail pop up/ handmade faire with over 150 artists, hosted by an indie boutique in Philadelphia. There are also vintage style carnival games, bands all day long, and healthy food galore.
Maker Faire May 16th and 17th San Francisco, CA
What they describe as the greatest show and tell on Earth, this festival hosts tech projects, hands on demos, and DIY art and design. It’s an all ages affair and always blows minds.
Renegade June 6th, June 13th, June 20th, June 27th New York, NY
Renegade is like the mother of all craft fairs. They have events in London, LA, San Francisco, and beyond. What’s really cool about this summer’s event in NY is that it’s a month long. Renegade features some of the coolest makers in the world because it’s widely influential and far-reaching. It’s one of the best places in the world to see handmade design goods.
INDIEana Handicraft Exchange Saturday June 12th Indianapolis, IN
Indie in Indy? Yes, please. The Handicraft Exchange is full of eye candy in art, craft and design and exhibits in conjunction with the Independent Music and Art Festival. Both take place in a beautiful treasure of Indianapolis – The Harrison Center for the Arts, a stone building built in 1903.
Urban Craft Uprising Seattle June 27th and 28th Seattle, WA
Urban Craft Uprising is one of the biggest design shows in the Northwest and has over 15k in attendance each weekend. They exhibit over 15o makers at a time and are their 11th year. Need I say more?
Outside Lands Aug 7th – 9th San Francisco, CA
This is the only music festival I put on the list and one of my favorite festivals ever. What’s amazing is that even though it’s a music festival headlined by people like Elton John, Wilco, The Black Keys, and Hot Chip they haven’t missed out on the art curated by Juxtapoz Magazine and foodie faire galore. This is a festival that has something for everybody.
Burning Man August 30th – September 7th Black Rock City, NV
If you want to change your life go to Burning Man. Seriously, this is a festival that everyone should visit at least once in their life. It’s absolutely original blend of art, camping, yoga, freedom, and rave in the middle of a former sea bed which has since become a desert. It’s a magical place that describing in words does not do justice. Just go!
Wizard World – Comic Con (US)Â A Bunch of Dates throughout the Summer – USA and CHINA
Get your nerd on! They take place in tons of different cities across the country and always having something new to offer. Hear M. Night Shyamalan speak about making movies, see how the company that designed the Lord of the Rings film sets worked their magic, meet that artists that draw Catwoman, The Silver Surfer, and Spider-Man comics and more.
