I am so pleased to have had the chance to interview painter and illustrator, FERN. Her work seems to be spreading like wildfire across the internet jungle! Fern’s paintings are vibrant and colorful with an electric feel. I think they are a perfect merge of fine art and portraiture. You shall be thoroughly impressed…

First, please tell us a little bit about yourself and your artistic background. Where are you from? Where are you now?

Hello! My name is Nichole Fern, I’m 20 years old (21 in July) and I’m currently a freelance artist and an art student. I am currently in my fourth year of uni, but on a leave. I’ll be back in August to finish and get my diploma.

Right now I’m in the Philippines, but I spent some of my childhood in California.

Did you always feel destined to be an artist? Were you ever unsure?

Ever since I learned how to use a pencil, I have been drawing and drawing non-stop. All my life I knew this was what I was meant to do. Not once was I unsure about art being my career.

What’s your process like when you start a new piece? Do you spend a lot of time working out concepts or do you just create for the moment?

Sometimes I envision an idea and write it down immediately on my phone, I don’t spend a lot of time thinking of what to make cause ideas just go to me and I work on them ASAP. A lot of times I find myself doodling and then that just becomes a full blown work. I don’t over think these things.

What are your favorite art supplies? Are there any mediums that intimidate you?

I’m a big fan of acrylic paint form Chromacryl, its what I primarily use. I also like watercolor and chalk pastels.

A medium that intimidates me is oil, because it doesn’t really suit my painting style. I like rapid movements so oil doesn’t really do that for me. It takes a lot of patience and I am not the most patient person haha. My strokes are quick and bold.

What inspires your color palette?

I think a big factor is my personality. I’m a really bubbly person; so, I guess the neon colors I use reflect that. I am a super big fan of pink, blue, and purple. ALL my works have those colors.

How has your art changed your life?

Art is my life now. To be honest, if I wasn’t doing art, I have no idea what I would be doing. Sometimes I joke around that I would be dead by now if I wasn’t doing art lol. It makes my life worth living, gosh that is so cliché but yeah. This world is horrible but making art makes it worthwhile.

What makes you happiest in life?

A lot of things make me happy but if I had to sum it up I would say: my art, being loved by a super great guy, and pictures of cool puppers.
